Dr Wayne Atkinson of the University of Melbourne has been awarded the 2013 ‘Rio Tinto Award for Excellence and Innovation in Indigenous Higher Education’. Dr Atkinson is an Elder of the Yorta Yorta and Dja Dja Wurrung Indigenous Nations of the Murray-Goulburn and Central Victoria region.

The Aurora Project is seeking applications from high achieving Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander undergraduates in any field of study, who have completed at least two years of their course of study. University graduates are also welcome to apply. Applications close Wednesday 24 July.

Bridget Hughes is a descendant of the Butchulla people of the Woonduna Clan from Fraser Island, and is actively involved with the Townsville Indigenous community as a teacher and parent.
Sharon has been awarded a Roberta Sykes Scholarship and will be going to Oxford University to undertake a Master’s in Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition.
Sarah Bourke is a descendant of the Djaru and Ongkomi people from WA on her mother’s side and the Gamilaroi people from NSW on her father’s side.
Roberta Sykes was born in 1944 and grew up in Townsville. She moved to Sydney in the early 1970s and became involved in the emerging Black Power movement.

Teliha Clarke, a Year 12 student at Dubbo College Senior Campus, has recently published her first children’s book, ‘The Devil up in the Tree’. She undertook the task of writing and publishing the book as part of her Aboriginal Studies HSC assessments.

Taryn Lee has been awarded a Roberta Sykes Scholarship and will be flying to London in October to begin a Master's of Arts in Understanding and Securing Human Rights at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, University of London.

‘I didn’t think I’d go to university,’ says 27-year-old Amelia Sharah from Peak Hill, ‘I just never saw myself as an academic person’. Amelia is now studying Electrical Engineering at the University of Newcastle, having received a Northparkes Mines Indigenous Scholarship.

Metro Screen is offering scholarships to 15 Indigenous Australians, who are interested in working as producers or production managers in the digital, TV and film industries. Successful applicants will undertake a 10 day accredited course. The course starts on 13 September 2013 at Metro Screen, Paddington Town Hall, in Sydney.
